Fitting A Window Sill

In today’s post, we’re going to be covering how to fit a window sill.

Measure The Area

Before you buy a window sill, you’ll need to measure the space where it will be fitted.

It’s always best to order slightly over the size needed. It will be better to be able to cut it down slightly if you have measured wrong rather than needing to order another piece because it’s too small.

Choose The Material

There’s plenty of options to choose from in this regard.

A lot of people are hung up on using ‘real’ wood like Pine and Oak. However, these can be very expensive and aren’t always the best for the job.

MDF is becoming the most popular material for window sills, but you need to make sure that it’s the moisture resistant variant that you’re using due to condensation that is often found on windows.

Cut To Size

Now you’ve measured up, chosen a material and have the window sill, you’re ready to cut it to size (unless it’s already the perfect fit!).

Window sills don’t need to be mitred as the area is generally rectangular where they’re fitted.

If you’re planning on having either side of the window board extending past the edge of the wall, you’ll need to have ordered wider and use a jigsaw to cut out the material to leave the ‘notches’.

Install The Window Sill

Now you’re ready to install it!

Most people will use screws and adhesive to install to window sill. Both will help to secure it and keep it in place.

Apply The Final Finish

If you’ve chosen a material like Pine or Oak, you’ll be able to stain or paint it. Either way, make sure you at least use some sort of finish to add an extra layer of protection to the sill.

If you’ve gone for MDF, it’ll likely be primed by the supplier so you’ll need to apply your final finish coat.
